Social Game “Whales” Important For Game Developers

Increasingly, there appears to be some evidence that instead of simply looking at the monthly active user list of a social game, you should increasingly look at how many “whales” the game can attract to it. By whales, we’re not referring to anyone’s weight here–we’re talking about the amount of money these players spend in a social game. According to Inside Social Games, whales are defined as those that spend over $1000 in virtual goods per year. These people are pretty rare in social gaming, so attracting them…

E3 2010: Pac-Man Party Hands-On (Nintendo Wii)

At E3 2010, I had a chance to go hands-on with Pac-Man Party, a new Namco title for the Nintendo Wii. As the name would suggest, the title is a party game, which will have you and your friends staring as members from Pac-Man lore. Of course there’s Pac-Man, as well as Pinky, Blinky, Inky, and Clyde, among others. Pac-Man Party can be most easily described as a digital board game, but containing various mini-games and a complete substitution of the dice rolling system for its main…

Help Celebrate a Birthday With New FarmVille Items

For those who haven’t been playing the game since launch, FarmVille first debuted on Facebook in July of 2009, and it appears as though the FarmVille team at Zynga is gearing up for a mighty birthday celebration, as their farming simulator approaches its first birthday, as they are already releasing birthday themed items in the game. As of right now, these items aren’t marked or labeled in any way as being limited edition, so it appears as though they may be permanent additions to the game. There…

Zynga Tweaks FarmVille Fertilization Timer & Tuscan Wedding Ingredients

In addition to the new Move and Recycle tools released in FarmVille last night, and the Cracked Ribbon, Zynga has also made a few “behind the scenes” changes (if you will) that deal with the more technical aspects of the game, but still affect all users. First, they have changed the timer on fertilizing your neighbors’ crops. Where the timer used to be set at once every 24 hour period (meaning that if you fertilized their farm at, say, 6 PM, you couldn’t fertilize again until after 6 PM the…

FarmVille Loses 7.7 Million Players in the Month of May

Just this morning, we took a look at how games and applications on Facebook have changed since the removal of third-party notifications on the platform. We speculated that not only the removal of notifications, but also the age of some games has led to the overall decline seen throughout the platform, in terms of the sheer number of users playing games or using apps, and it seems that Inside Social Games agrees with that claim. What’s more, they have released last month’s figures for the top 25 Facebook games for May,…

Ubisoft Definitely Not Done With Prince of Persia

A double dose of Prince of Persia is quite a lot to take in at one time with both a major motion picture and home video game hitting within the same period of time. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hits theaters this Friday which coincides with the release of the Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands game that just launched last week. Even though there is plenty of Prince of Persia to take in right now, Ubisoft vows that they are nowhere near done with the…

Google CEO: 65,000 Android Devices Shipping Daily

At the Google shareholder meeting held last week, Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt stated that 65,000 Android devices are now being shipped everyday and that there are now 34 mobile devices running the OS in 49 countries. Speculation is that Schmidt’s estimate is actually considerably low compared to actual counts in that most estimates believe it’s closer to two million handsets per month. Apple currently ships 8.75 million per quarter, so the two million number pits Google closer and closer to that number. “Our strategy is very different from everybody…
