The unveiling of Tesla’s redesigned second-generation Roadster has been postponed from October 1 to October 15 due to severe weather predictions. The event, originally planned for October 1 in Waco, Texas, will now take place on October 15. Tesla announced the rescheduling on X, stating, “We’ve been tracking the weather closely with local meteorologists, but given the severe conditions predicted & because this event can only be held outdoors, we’ve made the difficult decision to reschedule.”
The need for an outdoor setting likely ties to Tesla’s goal of incorporating cold gas thrusters from SpaceX, aimed at giving the Roadster some flight capabilities. This ambitious feature has contributed significantly to the event’s repeated delays. The unveiling has faced multiple postponements over the years, with Elon Musk even suggesting that the original date could fall on April Fools’ Day, providing him “some deniability” if further delays occurred. He commented, “Like, I could say I was just kidding.”
Tesla first introduced the concept of the second-generation Roadster in 2017 at the same event that launched the Tesla Semi. This new Roadster is designed to be the first supercar created entirely from the ground up by Tesla, unlike the original Roadster, which was primarily based on the Lotus Elise.
When Tesla first revealed the Roadster, it collected $50,000 deposits from interested buyers, with an estimated base price of around $200,000. Some fans even paid as much as $250,000 to reserve one of the 1,000 “Founders Series” models. However, the project has seen delays and has been stagnant for a while. Musk has mentioned that it could take a year or more post-reveal before the new Roadster actually goes into production.
Even with the excitement surrounding the prospect of a flying car, doubts persist. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his frustration about the lengthy wait, saying, “7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait” for his own new Roadster, although Musk asserted that Altman had received a refund.
With the event now rescheduled, the future of the Roadster remains unclear, demonstrating that even cutting-edge technology faces hurdles, not only in design but also in timing. The path to the new Roadster’s unveiling has been tumultuous, illustrating the complexities of innovation within the automotive sector.
