Shopify allows browser-based AI agents to access checkout process

Shopify has made a notable advancement by allowing browser-based AI agents to complete purchases directly on its merchants’ sites. On September 28, 2026, Shopify announced that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases directly on its merchants’ sites.

Previously, Shopify supported WebMCP, which enabled these agents to navigate a retailer’s inventory and perform initial shopping actions. With this latest update, WebMCP now includes support for checkout processes, featuring the popular Shop Pay option. This means AI agents can read the checkout screen, make updates, and submit transactions–all with the buyer’s authorization and without relying on screenshots or web scraping.

Three new tools have been introduced: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. These tools allow agents to inspect the checkout screen, modify customer details like addresses or delivery options, and finalize the order once the buyer gives the go-ahead.

The rollout of this feature will extend to all eligible Shopify merchants. Gil Greenberg, a product manager at Shopify focused on agentic commerce, highlighted the efficiency of using WebMCP tools. He stated, “If your agent is operating in the buyer’s browser, use WebMCP tools provided on storefront and checkout to efficiently complete order placement, instead of navigating HTML built for humans.” This structured approach ensures that accurate commerce facts, required disclosures, and handoff requirements are maintained.

While Shopify is embracing this technology, not all platforms are following suit. Retailers like Amazon and Adidas have blocked AI agents from making purchases on their platforms. This distinction underscores Shopify’s forward-thinking approach in integrating AI into the e-commerce landscape.

AI agents such as Muse and Instinct are already collaborating with Shopify on this agentic commerce initiative. These partnerships aim to further streamline the shopping experience, although it’s important to note that the integration does not provide a direct checkout experience for agents. Instead, it directs customers into Shopify’s own checkout process within an in-app browser, which differs from some other AI channels that offer embedded payment options.

Shopify’s integration of AI agents into the purchasing process represents a significant shift in e-commerce, allowing these agents to interact directly with checkout systems and complete transactions on behalf of buyers. This advancement raises important questions about the effectiveness of AI in enhancing the shopping experience versus the potential risks associated with privacy and security, especially as other major retailers opt not to implement similar features.
