Mavi anticipates AI growth will drive demand for a new type of

Mavi has emerged from stealth mode, aiming to fill a significant gap in the U.S. accounting industry by connecting companies with top global talent skilled in AI. Co-founders Molly Liu and Aman Puri emphasize that the U.S. accounting profession is shrinking, and many professionals lack the AI skills necessary for growth. This situation creates an urgent demand for a new type of finance professional who can effectively utilize AI tools and make informed decisions.

Liu notes that many U.S. companies hesitate to engage with global talent. This reluctance arises from the complexities of hiring and managing international employees, as well as a belief that this talent might not match the quality of local professionals. However, Liu argues that there’s been a new wave of tremendous talent, a really high bar that is equal or even better than the U.S.

Mavi focuses on quickly finding full-time, long-term placements that augment in-house finance teams, with a focus on mid-level and senior-level positions. This strategy not only addresses the immediate talent shortage but also helps manage the logistical challenges of global hiring, such as cross-border contracts and compliance issues. Liu stresses that companies still need experienced humans to make judgment calls on critical work, especially as the role of accountants evolves.

The accounting landscape is changing; being an accountant today requires not just a solid grasp of finance and accounting fundamentals but also the ability to effectively direct AI tools. Liu points out that traditional accountants may lack the skills to incorporate AI into their workflows or to oversee AI applications within finance. As companies adopt more AI technologies, the more pressure that adds to those in senior roles, compelling them to rely on their reasoning skills more than ever.

Interestingly, the rise of AI in accounting is likely to automate many entry-level positions, resulting in a shortage of mid-level talent since fewer entry-level professionals will move up into those roles. This shift highlights the need for businesses to seek experienced professionals who can bridge the gap between technology and practical application.

Mavi has already attracted attention, raising a $4 million seed round led by Harlem Capital last year and now featuring over 3,000 accounting professionals on its platform. Notable enterprise clients include Athena Club, a personal care company. Liu envisions the future of finance teams as centered on high-skill talent and critical judgment, both essential for navigating the complexities of modern business operations.

As the demand for AI proficiency increases, companies must adapt to this new reality, ensuring they have the right talent to harness the capabilities of AI tools while maintaining the human element vital for sound decision-making. Mavi’s approach could be a crucial step toward reshaping the future of finance, blending technology with the expertise needed to thrive in an increasingly automated world.
