Instagram announced on Wednesday that it’s bringing an AI video editing tool called Edits, its CapCut competitor. Unlike standard editing tools that often provide generic advice, this conversational AI assistant offers personalized feedback based on individual performance metrics.
Brett Westervelt, who leads the Edits app, shared insights about the tool’s capabilities in a blog post. “The assistant knows your account’s Instagram metrics, things like follows, views, video retention, likes, shares and combines them with your comments, what’s trending on Instagram and what your audience is into,” he explained. This allows creators to gain actionable insights that are hard to see from the metrics alone.
To ensure the tool meets the needs of creators, Edits was developed in collaboration with a group of content creators. Westervelt pointed out, “One thing we heard consistently: creators want a tool that handles the analysis, not one that does the creative work for them.” The Edits assistant does the digging for users while leaving the creative decisions firmly in the hands of the creators.
Meta first previewed the Edits AI assistant in June at an invite-only creator event, where it also said it was working on an Edits desktop app. This development comes as other platforms are also exploring AI-assisted content creation. For example, YouTube recently revealed its own conversational video editing tool, expected to be available early next year, which will help creators with the actual editing process.
From what we can tell so far, it looks like Meta is taking a more analytics-driven approach with its AI assistant than YouTube, which suggested creators would use its AI to help with the actual editing process. Meta seems to focus more on analytics-driven insights, empowering creators to make informed choices based on their unique metrics. In contrast, YouTube’s strategy suggests its AI will assist more directly in the editing process itself.
Creators using the Edits tool will face a limit on how often they can access its features. However, those looking to expand their usage can unlock additional capabilities with a Meta One subscription. This tiered access model allows creators to customize their usage according to their specific needs and engagement levels.
The Edits tool combines personalized feedback with analytical insights, allowing creators to make more informed decisions based on their specific Instagram metrics. This focus on analytics sets it apart from competitors like YouTube, which leans toward assisting directly in the editing process. The tiered access model further enables creators to tailor their experience based on engagement levels, reflecting a growing trend in content creation tools that prioritize personalized user experiences.
