Google is revolutionizing productivity tools by embedding conversational AI features into its Docs, Gmail, and Keep applications. Users can now interact with their emails and documents using natural language, and with the ability to ask questions and dictate commands directly into their emails and documents.
These features were first teased at the Google I/O conference in May, branded as Docs Live, Gmail Live, and Keep Live. Each tool serves a unique purpose. In Gmail, for example, users can converse with a Gemini AI assistant to gather insights about their inbox, moving beyond traditional search methods. A live transcript provides instant feedback as users engage with the assistant.
In Docs, users can articulate their writing needs, prompting the AI to generate an initial draft based on provided instructions. The AI also pulls relevant information from Gmail, Drive, and the web, ensuring that the drafts are both comprehensive and contextually appropriate. This integration of data positions Google’s tools at the forefront of writing applications.
Keep Live functions as an interactive notepad, enabling users to capture ideas without typing. For example, if someone wants to create a list of ingredients for shakshouka, they can simply voice their request, and the tool will compile it for them.
Gmail Live requires a Google AI Plus subscription or higher, while Docs Live and Keep Live require Pro or Ultra—meaning most users need at least a Pro plan to access all three features. All features are set to launch in English on both iOS and Android, with plans to extend access to Workplace Business customers shortly.
Google has been actively improving its voice features across various applications. In April, the company introduced cross-app dictation for its Mac app. The new Pixel 11 smartphones also feature a Gemini-powered dictation tool called Rambler, which reduces filler words during speech. Furthermore, in August, Google launched the Gemini 3.5 Transcribe model to enhance speech-to-text functionality.
Beginners should start with Google AI Plus for basic access to new features. Developers should choose the Pro plan for enhanced capabilities across all applications. Power users will prefer the Ultra plan to maximize their productivity with advanced tools.
