A new personal AI assistant, Tab, launches with a $300M valuation

A new player has emerged in the personal AI assistant market with a striking $300 million valuation. Tab, which made its official debut on Tuesday, aims to distinguish itself as a premium, always-on personal assistant rather than just another AI service. While the company has not disclosed specific funding details, its valuation indicates strong investor confidence.

Founded earlier this year by Brennan Erbz, Stafford Schlitt, and Ammar Amdani, Tab is designed to assist users with various everyday tasks, such as making reservations and booking travel. The service operates through popular messaging platforms like iMessage and WhatsApp, enabling users to communicate their needs effortlessly. “You text it like you’d text someone you trust and it takes the weight off,” Amdani explained, highlighting the assistant’s aim to handle mundane tasks–everything from managing bills to remembering special occasions.

With its own phone number, computer, and wallet, Tab doesn’t just provide instructions; it acts on requests directly. Amdani emphasized this feature, stating, “It doesn’t tell you how to do those things. It does them.” This sets Tab apart from many existing AI assistants that primarily guide users without executing actions themselves.

Investors backing Tab’s early funding round include SV Angel, Valar Ventures, and American Spirit. The company is currently experiencing growth mainly through word of mouth, indicating a solid early market presence and user satisfaction. Amdani also hinted at plans for future product launches, suggesting ongoing development and enhancement of services.

In a competitive landscape, Amdani acknowledged the consumer AI race, where numerous companies are striving to create more capable AI assistants. “Everyone is racing to make AI more capable,” he noted, adding that success won’t rely solely on performance metrics. He believes the key question is whether users can trust these AI systems. “The winners of this consumer AI race won’t necessarily be the ones with the best demos,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of trust in this sector.

Tab’s emphasis on user trust is a crucial differentiator in the competitive personal AI market. By ensuring that users’ data remains secure and not used for AI training, Tab is addressing a significant concern many potential users have about privacy. This focus on trust, combined with its unique capability to execute tasks directly rather than just providing instructions, positions Tab as a contender that could reshape user expectations for personal AI assistants.
