1. Stranger Than Heaven
Release date: Jan. 15, 2027
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios’ Stranger Than Heaven tells a story spanning fifty years. It’s technically an action-adventure rather than a JRPG, but its substantial storytelling, optional exploration, and side quests give role-playing game fans plenty to dig into.
Combat promises to be more intricate and challenging than either Yakuza’s button-mashing action or Like a Dragon’s turn-based battles. Both Tupac and Snoop Dogg also appear in the game, though the preview doesn’t explain their roles.
Polygon describes 2026 as relatively quiet for Japanese role-playing games, with Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave as an exception. This action-adventure from the Yakuza creator joins the major JRPG series scheduled for 2027.
2. Persona 4 Revival
Release date: Feb. 18, 2027
Rather than the slick city settings often associated with Atlus’s Persona series, Persona 4 takes you to Inaba, a sleepy rural town. You’re a new transfer student at the local high school, spending your days making friends and keeping your grades up. At night, you investigate supernatural phenomena.
The mystery centers on the Midnight Channel, a television station broadcasting creepy videos on rainy nights. Those broadcasts appear connected to an ongoing serial murder case, giving the school-life routine a much darker counterpoint.
Polygon praises the original game’s roller-coaster plot twists, music, and endearing ensemble cast. Those are the foundations it looks forward to revisiting in this upgraded version.
3. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation
Release date: April 8, 2027
Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is set to conclude during the original PlayStation game’s 30th anniversary year. Revelation also adds the Highwind airship, making new open-world travel possible.

Polygon’s open-world gameplay preview examines what the Highwind makes possible. Its separate impressions of the opening sequence describe a tease of Cloud’s approaching realization about what actually happened in Nibelheim five years earlier.
The publication calls the trilogy ambitious and praises the new story twists introduced by Remake and Rebirth. Both also packed in minigames and optional content. Its expectation for Revelation is more of that combination: changes to a familiar story alongside plenty to do away from the main quest.
4. Kingdom Hearts 4
Release date: TBD 2027
Sora returns after eight years in Kingdom Hearts 4. With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation taking the spotlight at Summer Game Fest, Polygon hadn’t expected an extensive update so soon. The June Nintendo Direct nevertheless delivered the first in-depth look at the sequel since 2022.
Square Enix followed up with another trailer in August at Disney’s twice-yearly D23 conference, according to Polygon. It revealed a world inspired by Pixar’s Coco and included gameplay for Goofy, Mickey, and Donald.
There’s still no specific launch date. Polygon expects more news next summer, after Revelation‘s release. The preview anticipates that some of the games with only a broad 2027 window could arrive in the second half of the year, but it doesn’t confirm that timing for Kingdom Hearts 4.
5. Xenoblade Genesis
Release date: TBD 2027
The same Nintendo Direct that brought Kingdom Hearts 4 back into view also introduced Xenoblade Genesis. Monolith Soft’s entirely new entry is a Switch 2 exclusive, though its debut trailer offered relatively little gameplay.
It did establish the premise. An elite academy trains young warriors to use Anima, a powerful force amplified by special weapons. Those weapons have another ability: they can record their users’ thoughts. Polygon’s take on that detail: “I’m sure there’s nothing sinister at work here!”
The preview praises the beautiful, expansive landscapes and character designs, drawing a visual connection to previous Xenoblade games. It also reasons that Nintendo generally doesn’t announce first- or second-party games many years before release, so it expects another look during a winter or spring Direct. Neither that anticipated presentation nor a precise release date is confirmed in the preview.
6. Persona 6
Release date: TBD 2027
It’s been a decade since Persona 5’s Japanese debut. After the Phantom Thieves’ various adventures, the next numbered entry received its first official glimpse at June’s Xbox Games Showcase. Its release window remains 2027, without a specific date.
The short trailer opens in a rainy graveyard crowded with headstones, intercut with white noise, rumbling thunder, and a faint mechanical drone. The camera rises toward a headless human statue, followed by the silhouette of a hand reaching toward it.
A rapid sequence of collage imagery follows: facial features cut from magazines, pointing fingers, and what appear to be firing brain synapses. Polygon found the teaser frustratingly sparse but welcomed it as a sign that the game is on the way. It expects a fuller look after Persona 4 Revival‘s release; the preview gives no specific date for that reveal.
This partial segment preserves the six entries available from the source preview.
