Laytr’s new app allows you to save anything you discover online

Laytr has introduced a new app that allows users to save nearly anything they come across online. From articles and recipes to screenshots, videos, PDFs, bookmarks, and tabs, Laytr can handle it all. This versatility helps tackle the common challenge of managing the diverse types of content we encounter on the web.

A key feature of Laytr is its organization system, which groups saved items into collections called “cases.” Users can also set reminders for specific saved items on chosen dates, making it easier to plan around local events or simply to revisit certain content. This clever functionality helps you manage your digital consumption more effectively.

Privacy is fundamental to Laytr’s design. Everything saved within the app is stored as a private archive that only you can access on your device. There’s no need to create an account, which means the developer cannot see what you save. This approach keeps your saved content confidential while allowing access across multiple Apple devices–like your iPhone, iPad, and Mac–through iCloud syncing.

The brain behind Laytr is Mostafa Talaat, an indie developer from Ontario, Canada. Talaat was inspired to create this app after learning about the shutdown of the popular read-it-later app, Pocket. He opted for a serverless design for privacy reasons, stating, “What you save says a lot about you, and I didn’t want to be holding it. Everything stays on your device and in your own iCloud.” This reflects a growing concern for digital privacy in app development.

When saving an item in Laytr, the app prompts you to select when you want to be reminded about it. Plus, if you’re transitioning from Pocket, Laytr conveniently imports your old Pocket exports, so you won’t lose your history or have to start anew.

For those eager to try Laytr, there’s a free version that allows you to save up to 30 items. If you need more, the Premium tier costs $1.99 per month, $14.99 per year, or a one-time fee of $39.99 for a lifetime plan. The lifetime option is currently on sale for $24.99 until the end of December.

If your Premium subscription lapses, you won’t lose your saved items; however, you won’t be able to add new ones until you either rejoin a plan or reduce your saved items to fit within the free tier limit. Leaving Laytr is also straightforward, as all your saved content can be exported as a ZIP file, complete with readable Markdown and HTML for every item, note, tag, date, and collection.

While Laytr prioritizes user privacy, it does not offer personalized feeds or AI features for summarizing or tagging items. This keeps the experience simple and user-controlled, focusing on what you want to save rather than what the app thinks you might enjoy.
