Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated game, Physint, has shifted to Xbox after an unexpected cancellation by Sony. This move marks Kojima’s first major console partnership outside PlayStation since leaving Konami.
Microsoft confirmed this transition, revealing that Physint will now be developed under the Xbox brand. Kojima initially unveiled the game at a Sony State of Play event in January 2024, alongside Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios. The partnership with Xbox arose after Sony suddenly informed Kojima in June that they would withdraw support for the project.
Kojima expressed his dedication to the game, stating, “Physint is a project that is extremely important to me and Kojima Productions. We are committed to bringing it to life, so over the past three months, we tirelessly searched for a new partner. We found in Xbox a collaborator who shares our vision for the future, and thus, we decided to join forces with them.” This declaration highlights the game’s importance to Kojima and his studio.

This collaboration with Microsoft is not entirely new, as Kojima had previously entrusted his horror adventure project, OD, to Xbox. Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, noted that Kojima and his team will also engage in developing films and TV series, broadening their creative landscape. “It is an honor for us that Kojima-san chose Xbox to collaborate on Physint. Challenging and pushing the boundaries of conventional frameworks reflects the kind of creativity we wish to support at Xbox,” Sharma stated.
PlayStation acknowledged the situation with a brief response, confirming that their decision to withdraw from Physint followed careful consideration while reiterating their respect for Kojima’s work. They expressed interest in future collaborations, though it may take time, as Kojima intends to prioritize completing OD first. Development for Physint is not projected to begin until late 2026, leaving fans eagerly anticipating its eventual launch on the next Xbox console, Project Helix.
