Ubisoft has unveiled the much-anticipated remake of Heroes of Might & Magic III at Gamescom 2026, igniting excitement among fans of the classic 1999 game. This new version aims to blend nostalgia with modern gaming features, reviving a title that has captivated players for over 25 years.
The announcement follows Ubisoft’s recent tribute to the franchise through the release of Olden Era, indicating that the remake has been in development alongside it. Attendees at Gamescom were treated to an exclusive first look and hands-on experience, Jon Van Caneghem, the original creator, is collaborating with the Horn of the Abyss community team on the remake.
Utilizing the Snowdrop engine, the remake significantly enhances the visuals while maintaining the core gameplay essence. Ubisoft has preserved the cherished designs and ambiance of Heroes III, updating them with modern graphics while keeping the fundamental mechanics intact. Fans can expect a faithful representation of the classic turn-based strategy gameplay that solidified the original as a cult favorite.
This remake surpasses the previous HD remaster by not only including the base game but also its expansions. Players will have access to the Armageddon’s Blade expansion, introducing the Conflux faction, as well as additional campaigns from The Shadow of Death. This comprehensive package allows players to fully immerse themselves in the entire Heroes III saga when it launches in 2027.
Jon Van Caneghem, the original creator of the series, is playing a key role in the remake process, collaborating with pivotal community members, including the team behind the popular fan expansion, Horn of the Abyss. This collaboration underscores Ubisoft’s intention to forge a strong connection with the community and ensure the remake honors the legacy of the original title.
During the presentation, attendees participated in a tutorial featuring Queen Catherine, which covered the gameplay fundamentals. Following this, players tested their skills in a scenario against three AI opponents. The familiar mechanics quickly re-emerged, with players gathering resources and engaging in battles, reminiscent of the original experience from 25 years ago.
The playable demo showcased four factions: Castle, Tower, Inferno, and Necropolis. The complete game is set to include all nine original factions, each enhanced with improved visuals and animations. Units now display in 3D, exhibiting fluid movements as they gather in cities during recruitment.
Players will find that the remake retains approximately 90% of the original Heroes III experience, with quality-of-life enhancements including automated hero actions and building plans inspired by community mods.
The shift to 3D graphics removes iconic audio elements: the cheerful windmill sound and haunting obelisk melodies are absent, a significant loss for players prioritizing nostalgia over visual modernization.
Despite these concerns, it remains premature to dismiss the remake entirely. With the game still in development, there is potential for adjustments before its release. However, sacrificing certain nostalgic elements for modern aesthetics presents a risk of alienating long-time fans, especially since these aspects helped define the original’s allure. The hope is that developers will remain attuned to the series’ roots and thoughtfully navigate their design choices, especially in light of the recent release of Olden Era.
As the release date approaches, the gaming community is eager to see how Ubisoft navigates the delicate balance between nostalgia and innovation. The remake launches in 2027 with all nine factions, expansions, and 90% of original gameplay plus community-inspired quality-of-life features.
