Xbox Enjoys a Successful Week at Last

Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature is now officially live after a testing period. It lets players claim digital licenses for games they already own on disc, adding convenience and value to physical games while helping collectors prepare for an all-digital future.

This week marked a pivotal moment for Xbox as the review embargo lifted on Gears of War: E-Day. The game scored an impressive 87 on Metacritic, making it one of the better-reviewed AAA titles of 2026. Players can expect plenty of gory action and emotional storytelling, staying true to the franchise’s legacy.

Asha Sharma, Xbox’s CEO, was fielded for a New York Times profile this week. A notable moment from the interview was her denial of rumors that Microsoft was putting the platform up for sale – a reassuring statement, though one she shouldn’t have to make. This response came against a backdrop of previous disruptions, including layoffs and the transfer of the Halo franchise to Activision.

Alongside the new gaming feature and the successful game release, Xbox is rolling out much-requested platform updates. Among these updates is the introduction of Mythic Achievements, Xbox’s answer to PlayStation’s Platinum Trophies. While this addition may not be groundbreaking, it highlights Xbox’s efforts to keep players engaged and satisfied.

The launch of the disc-to-digital feature isn’t just a clever marketing move; it may have been a PR response to Sony’s recent decision to end physical game production. I’m not sure if disc-to-digital was spun up as a PR response to Sony’s decision to end physical game production. If so, it was quick work; if not, it showed great foresight. This is the kind of thing platform-holders should be doing, and not just as fan-service.
