Overwatch’s Biggest Hero Rework in Years is on the Horizon

Blizzard is shaking things up in _Overwatch_ with a major rework for Sombra, transitioning her from a damage-dealing hero to a support role. This change, set to launch with season 5 on October 6, marks one of the most ambitious character reworks in the game’s history. While this move has stirred some controversy among Sombra mains, who aren’t thrilled about becoming a healer, the developers are confident that her core gameplay will remain intact.

Alec Dawson, associate game director for _Overwatch_, provided insights into the rework process. He noted that the initial goal wasn’t to shift Sombra into a support role. The development team focused on refining her “triangle of lethality,” which includes her damage capabilities, invisibility, and hacking skills, while ensuring her personality and gameplay style stayed recognizable.

Dawson emphasized the importance of keeping Sombra’s essence intact. “Sombra, the soul of her, was really important to keep intact,” he said. Earlier versions of her rework, which kept her in the damage category, struggled to fully realize this vision. The team ultimately arrived at a version that is “really active, really aggressive,” steering clear of a bland healing playstyle. Players shouldn’t expect her to simply hang back and heal; she will remain a proactive threat in matches.

While there’s excitement about these changes, Dawson acknowledged that players will need time to adjust to Sombra’s new role. “It’ll still take some time for players to get used to,” he admitted, pointing out that their expectations from teammates will evolve. However, he reassured players that once they understand her new abilities, they can still play Sombra in ways that feel familiar. Her new ability, Hot Fix, heals teammates for a large amount over a 12-second period, allowing for strategic plays without the need to babysit allies.

This change aims to keep Sombra as a formidable presence on the battlefield while supporting her team. Dawson noted that Hot Fix could be especially beneficial for characters like Winston or Genji, enhancing their combat engagement. The new dynamics promise to introduce fresh strategies for coordinated team play.

Alongside Sombra’s transformation, Blizzard is also rolling out a rework for Roadhog, further enriching season 5 with diverse gameplay adjustments. As players gear up for these changes, the community’s response and adaptation will be crucial for embracing a new chapter in _Overwatch_.
