OpenAI is venturing into territory typically ruled by Microsoft with a new suite of features tailored for office work, signaling a notable shift in how ChatGPT is positioned. During its Dev Day developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled several features that closely resemble Microsoft’s productivity tools.
The highlight of the announcement is a feature called Space, which acts as a shared workspace within ChatGPT. This tool enables coworkers to collaborate not only with the chatbot but also with their own Dots–new AI agent personas from OpenAI that can handle tasks for users. CEO Sam Altman pointed out that “Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive,” emphasizing the interactive aspect of this workspace. Users can provide specific instructions, such as checking a team channel and updating the page with relevant findings.
Alongside Space, OpenAI introduced Pages, a companion word processor that serves as an alternative to Google Docs and Microsoft Word. Pages allows users to write, research, generate charts, create images, and visualize information collaboratively, boosting productivity.
OpenAI is also enhancing its presentation tools with collaborative slides. These can be easily created by discussing them within the ChatGPT interface. Once generated, teams can collaborate on the slides, leaving comments and editing them in real-time–similar to the features offered by PowerPoint.
This initiative comes as Microsoft and other companies like Salesforce actively adapt to the growing influence of AI technologies. Over the past year, both firms have been busy releasing a variety of AI products to keep pace with the rapidly evolving software landscape.
