Dropout Announces New Scripted Series Parodying MTV

Dropout’s scripted comedy MP3 parodies MTV’s Total Request Live, with hosts Jeremy Culhane, Skye Townsend and Aparna Nancherla presenting videos and interviewing guests.

Dropout’s three-episode scripted series MP3 parodies music video countdown shows like MTV’s Total Request Live. The series marks a shift for the streamer, whose shows are mostly improv-heavy, and brings live-action scripted comedy back to Dropout after a seven-year gap.

Jeremy Culhane, Skye Townsend, and Aparna Nancherla play the hosts. Each episode, their characters present music videos, interview guests, and argue with their producer, played by Paul F. Tompkins.

Dropout regulars Katie Marovitch, Lou Wilson, and Jacob Wysocki appear as music video performers. Jess McKenna and Zach Reino play producers, appear in some of the videos, and write for the show. They also compose its music, with each song released on streaming services after its episode airs.

The trailer also features Anna Garcia as Princess Emily, her character from Very Important People. That appearance raises the possibility that other characters from across the Dropout network may cameo, though none are confirmed.

The first episode streams Wednesday, Nov. 4, followed by new episodes every two weeks on Nov. 18 and Dec. 2.

MP3 is Dropout’s latest experiment in a year that has also brought licensed content and a new scripted animated show. CEO Sam Reich recently told Polygon, “As far as Dropout is concerned, I want Dropout to be really all over the place in terms of what it’s trying.”
