Google has introduced Playground, an AI-driven platform for game creation that enables users to build browser-based games without any coding experience. Google launched Playground on Wednesday through Google Labs, its public incubator and experimental platform.
Users can choose from various genres, such as trivia and racing, or start a new project from scratch. They can opt for either 2D or 3D games and select between single-player and multiplayer options. Users can specify the game mechanics, gameplay style, and visual components they desire. Playground also lets users upload images that its AI converts into game assets matched to the game’s overall art style.
Once created, games can be accessed on both mobile devices and computers, extending their availability. Creators have the option to keep their projects private, share them through a link, or publish them in Playground’s Explore gallery. Even post-publication, creators can update their projects, enabling them to refine and improve their games based on feedback or new ideas.
Currently, Playground is accessible to users aged 18 and older in the U.S., with Google planning to broaden access to additional countries. While users can browse and play games in the catalog for free, game generation relies on a weekly token system. Those on the free tier receive a limited number of tokens, whereas Google One AI subscribers enjoy higher usage limits.
Roblox, for example, announced its own Build feature in July, enabling users to create games through natural-language prompts.
Moreover, Playground reflects Google’s broader interest in the gaming sector. The company previously explored cloud gaming with Stadia, which was discontinued in 2022, and has since integrated gaming features into platforms such as YouTube Playables, which provides immediate access to web-based games.
Google has also revealed plans to integrate Unity Spark in a future update, which could provide Playground users with enhanced 3D capabilities and professional-grade game mechanics through Unity’s technology, further expanding the creative opportunities available on the platform.
In addition to Playground, Google is testing a benchmarking system called Game Arena. This initiative aims to assess AI models within strategic games, highlighting the company’s focus on both game creation and AI performance in gaming environments.
