Apple Watch Series 10: what to expect next month?

The new model brings a number of improvements to the Apple Watch line, including larger displays, a more powerful chip and other innovations that take the Watch to the next level. Here’s what to expect from the new Apple Watch.

Larger displays on all models

Apple has clearly noticed the buzz around the Apple Watch Ultra and its huge screen. This year’s Apple Watch Series 10 follows the successful Ultra strategy, with both Series 10 models getting larger displays.

  • The smaller Watch goes from 41 mm to 45 mm
  • The larger Watch goes from 45 mm to 49 mm

This means the small Watch will now take on the size of last year’s “big Watch”, while the big Watch will be the same size as the Apple Watch Ultra. This is a significant change for the Watch series, which has already been growing over the years. The first Watch models were 38mm and 42mm.

Increasing the smallest flagship to 45 mm may alienate some customers who prefer smaller watches. However, Apple probably wouldn’t dare make such a change without data to back it up. Let’s wait and see what users think!

Thinner case

Besides the larger screens, the Watch’s external changes include a thinner case. There are no exact dimensions yet, but the reduction in thickness could alleviate any concerns about larger displays. Given the Watch’s current thickness, larger screens could make for a particularly bulky device. However, a thinner case could help offset this excess and create a more attractive design.

A stronger chip, possibly with artificial intelligence

The Apple Watch Series 10 will get a new chip, likely to be called S10. There’s a good chance it will improve the Neural Engine, which will provide a foundation for future artificial intelligence apps. The history of Apple Watch processor upgrades is mixed. Some years it gets a new chip, other years it doesn’t. With the advent of Apple Intelligence, however, we can expect Apple’s silicon team to increase the Watch’s processing power more often.

New health sensors

Apple is always working on new health sensors for the Watch. What is not certain, however, is when these sensors will be ready.

Two main sensors are being touted this year: one to detect hypertension and one to detect sleep apnea. However, according to the latest reports, it is not certain if these features will be ready for the Series 10. If either are ready, they will be great additions to existing health sensors.

Updated OLED display for better energy efficiency

Apple is always looking to improve its display technology, and this trend continues with the Apple Watch Series 10. The new Watch is expected to use ‘low temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin film transistor (TFT) technology’ in its OLED display.

This technology will allow the display to be more energy efficient. Apple can exploit this in a number of ways:

  • Increase display quality without sacrificing battery life,
  • maintain quality, and use the savings from energy efficiency to increase battery life,
  • or you can reduce the size of the watch’s battery, keeping last year’s battery life, and use the space saved to make other changes or to support a thinner case.

When is the Apple Watch Series 10 expected to launch?

Traditionally, Apple always introduces new Apple Watch models at the same time as new iPhones. It is expected to do so again this year, with an announcement in early to mid-September. 10 September is likely. The Apple Watch Series 10 is likely to be available for pre-order immediately after the announcement, with an official release date expected a week or two later.
