Ultron Takes Over Vision’s Body and Seeks Freedom in VisionQuest

VisionQuest episodes 3 and 4 recap: Vision hands Ultron control of his body to protect his son, and Ultron kills a woman and leaves with Tommy.

Vision just handed Ultron the keys to his own body, and he did it to protect his son. That’s the hinge of VisionQuest episodes three and four, which are now out. By the end of episode four, Ultron has taken over Vision’s body, killed a woman, and left with Tommy for parts unknown.

The setup is a chase for answers. Vision and his fellow AIs (well, almost every one of them) are piecing together the mystery of the Butcherbird and why several people from the same company keep going missing. Much of the trouble Vision has with the Paladin traces back to Ultron, who is working his own agenda the whole time.

After some extensive research, Vision, Tommy, and Lisa end up at a gala hosted by Katerina Wells. She’s the only one left of an executive team that Butcherbird has taken out one by one, so the group hopes to meet her and learn why Butcherbird is doing this. They aren’t at full strength, though. Vision is still not operating at maximum capacity and doesn’t have all of his abilities, and Tommy, while a speedster, isn’t quite in control of his powers yet.

Butcherbird shows up, as expected, and things get chaotic. She reveals that she doesn’t just look like the late Jo Carrington, the company’s CEO before her death. She actually is Jo Carrington. Then she morphs into Jocasta and starts beating the crap out of Vision.

That’s when Ultron makes his pitch. He tells Vision that his fear of Tommy getting hurt is holding him back, and that he should let him “take control.” Vision, being the loveable dummy that he is, agrees, and things go wrong immediately. Ultron pulls a little trick that leaves Katerina vaporized. Jocasta/Butcherbird is furious that he’s robbed her of her chance for revenge, though for what, we don’t know yet.

Then Ultron takes over Vision’s mindspace, locks everyone into place, and walks off with Tommy.

So what does Ultron want? If we look to the comics, Jocasta is clearly connected to him. Ultron built her himself to be his bride, though she was modeled on Janet van Dyne, aka the Wasp. In the show, Jocasta doesn’t seem to feel any affinity for him at this point, or even know him very well. Ultron also seems to want out of that loft space in Vision’s mindspace. He’ll surely craft some way to get all the way free, and for now, using Vision’s body and possibly putting Tommy in danger is a way to force Vision’s hand into letting him run loose.

Vision gave up control because he was afraid for Tommy, and that fear is exactly what Ultron is now using against him. Ultron has Vision’s body, Tommy is gone with him, and the person who might have explained Butcherbird’s grudge, Katerina, was vaporized before anyone could ask. Jocasta/Butcherbird is also angry at Ultron for taking her revenge, so the question of what she wanted from Katerina is still open.
