Red Dead Redemption 2 mod gives NPCs grudges and memories like Shadow of Mordor’s foes

Red Dead Redemption 2’s enRAGE PC mod gives NPCs memories, grudges and reasons to hunt Arthur Morgan in a dynamic faction system.

Steal someone’s horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, and the new enRAGE mod can give them a reason to hunt Arthur Morgan down later. Created for PC by modder nicklovin99, it gives NPCs memories and personal grudges, then folds those rivalries into a wider faction simulation that can keep running without Arthur’s involvement.

Characters get names, personality traits, family ties and backstories stretching back years before they meet the player. Those details shape their behavior: temperament affects how they react to Arthur, while memories influence whether they forgive an offense or seek revenge.

Robbery isn’t the only way to make an enemy. Insulting someone, beating them or stealing their horse can eventually turn that person into a nemesis. Resentment can grow into a desire to kill Arthur, and an NPC who survives a gunfight may return with scars or lasting injuries. Killing someone doesn’t necessarily end the trouble, either. Friends and relatives can learn what happened and pursue revenge themselves.

The comparison is with the Nemesis system in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. Enemy orcs in those games remember encounters, develop rivalries and return for revenge, turning otherwise random fights into personal vendettas that evolve over time. That continuity helped distinguish the games: an opponent could become a recurring character rather than another disposable enemy.

The Nemesis concept hasn’t appeared outside the Middle-earth games, partly because Warner Bros. patented the technology in 2021, which limited how other developers could use similar mechanics. enRAGE brings a similar idea to Rockstar’s open-world Western, but it isn’t an official Rockstar feature.

Beyond individual enemies, eight outlaw groups and the U.S. Army form a faction system with leaders, officers, camps, supplies and territory. Their rivalries can escalate into wars without the player getting involved.

Arthur can still change the balance. Killing an officer can alter a faction’s leadership, while attacks on camps or supply lines can weaken its ability to fight. The mod also simulates shifting alliances and territorial conflicts.

Not every interaction has to end in another shootout. Players can interrogate captured enemies for information about their leaders, hideouts and supplies, or attempt to settle a feud by telegram. An in-game chronicle records world events, and some incidents also appear in local newspapers.

There’s a catch: enRAGE is still in early access, and nicklovin99 warns that players should expect bugs because so many systems connect to one another. It requires the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 and is intended for Story Mode, not Red Dead Online.
