Episode 6 of Avatar: Seven Havens Reveals More of the Twins’ Past

Avatar: Seven Havens Episode 6 explores Pavi and Nisha’s past, a dangerous Harshlands trip, and medical findings that challenge Pavi’s memories.

For most people in Ellora, contact with the Anomaly brings overwhelming fear. For Pavi and Nisha, it brings back memories. Episode 6 of Avatar: Seven Havens shows the sisters’ parents discussing a dangerous trip through the Harshlands, adding another clue to the twins’ separation three years ago. A doctor’s findings about Pavi’s leg suggest that her understanding of that past may be wrong, too.

Released Friday, episodes 4, 5, and 6 of Book One: Survival push Ellora toward collapse through bandit attacks, mounting unrest, government secrecy, and the fear-based infection people call “The Anomaly.” The opening three episodes introduced the new Avatar and her long-lost twin, Pavi (Saheli Khan) and Nisha (Aishu Devan). This batch connects their missing history with the threat now consuming the Haven.

Major spoilers for Avatar: Seven Havens episodes 4, 5, and 6 follow.

What does the new memory reveal about Pavi and Nisha’s parents?

The latest memory finds the sisters asleep together, with their parents talking nearby. Their mother wants to know how many days the journey will take. “Two weeks,” their father replies. “If we can survive the Harshlands.” When she questions whether they’re doing the right thing, he says they have no other choice.

The scene seems to concern an event three years earlier, likely linking what the twins saw in episode 2 with Karthik’s account in episode 5. Their first, more fragmented vision showed four people crossing the Harshlands, an Anomaly storm, and a girl falling. That girl was presumably Pavi, though her identity hasn’t been confirmed.

Karthik (Akshay Khanna) supplies another part of the possible timeline. Three years ago, someone sent him instructions to meet at a pickup location and look for a girl with a green-gem bracelet. A sudden storm held him up. By the time he got there, he found only Nisha. The parents’ conversation now suggests that their planned crossing and Karthik’s delayed arrival could belong to the same sequence of events.

Then there’s Pavi’s leg. She believes she was born missing the lower portion of her left leg, but her appointment for pain in episode 6 challenges that belief. The doctor diagnoses phantom-limb pain and concludes that she lost her leg sometime within the past few years.

Taken together, these clues suggest that one incident in the Harshlands three years ago could explain the sisters’ lost memories, Pavi’s injury, their parents’ disappearance, and Nisha being alone when Karthik arrived. That connection is still unconfirmed. Even if the pieces do fit, the show hasn’t established whether this was the family’s first encounter with the Anomaly or whether something else happened.

The lullaby the twins recall in episode 4 adds another unresolved connection. Daemin (Darren Barnet) recognizes it early in the episode: Jae’s squadmate Uki sings it all the time. Uki is a firebender who was tracking the masked bandits called the Faceless before they abducted him. With Uki still missing, the sisters can’t yet investigate the song’s significance or find out whether he has any connection to their family.

These discoveries leave the larger mysteries intact, including how Korra caused the Cataclysm and why the Avatar appears to have reincarnated as both Pavi and Nisha. The sisters are recovering fragments of their family history, not a complete explanation.

Ellora’s fear feeds the threat that restores the twins’ memories

Earlier in the season, a major storm brought the diamond-shaped spirit monster to Ellora and left bright red cubes protruding from the ground. Like the spirit vines in Korra’s time, the cubes continue to spread. Their influence also instills fear in citizens, and the number of people infected appears to be increasing.

A whole sick ward is devoted to treating these citizens, known as the Afflicted. During Karthik’s visit, a doctor describes their intense fear and violent hallucinations. One patient is Bountan, the firebender who formerly commanded the Bending Brigade. His direct encounter with the Anomaly spirit in episode 2 drove him mad.

Pavi and Nisha join Karthik in the ward after the appointment about Pavi’s leg, and their arrival triggers a frenzy. The Afflicted see the Avatars as red-eyed demons with grinning faces. Bountan leads the patients through the hospital, where the fact that many are benders makes the attack especially dangerous. Their goal isn’t clear, but their hostility toward the twins is.

While avoiding the patients in the dark hallways, the sisters take markedly different approaches. Nisha traps one Afflicted person in stone. Pavi instead talks to another, understands that he’s scared, and uses earthbending to give him a cocoon-like hiding place. Polygon’s reading is that Pavi consistently acts with more compassion and restraint, whereas Nisha readily jumps into action. That invites a comparison between Pavi and Aang, and between Nisha and Korra, for whatever that’s worth. The practical consequence is clearer: watching the sisters helps Karthik understand that fear causes the Affliction rather than merely accompanying it.

That discovery helps explain why the infection spreads so quickly in a city with so much to fear. The Faceless are kidnapping benders, including Jae’s squadmate Yuki. Meanwhile, rumors that the Avatar has returned gain ground, particularly after a soldier witnesses the twins using multiple elements in episode 4. An increasing number of residents suspect Chancellor Kayoko (Jennifer Sun Bell) and the Bending Brigade of concealing the truth. Since these people believe the last Avatar destroyed the world, the rumors only deepen their alarm. Across the three episodes, Ellora’s civil unrest keeps worsening.

In episode 6, Karthik’s fight with the Afflicted Bountan reaches a ward filled with injured patients. The twins use earthbending to restrain Bountan while the familiar red lightning crackles along the ground. “The Spirit World has unleashed its wrath,” Bountan tells Karthik. “The fate of Ellora is in your hands.”

The returning diamond-shaped spirit soon overwhelms Karthik, leaving Pavi and Nisha to face it. Its energy hits their palms, and the entity shifts upward into a position parallel to the ground. The sisters enter the memory of their parents before the diamond seems to pass through them and vanish. Karthik later calls what they did Energy Bending. Where direct encounters with the Anomaly leave other people Afflicted, Energy Bending it gives the twins back pieces of their past.

After that confrontation, episode 6 closes with Kayoko contacting the other Havens through what appears to be a radio tower. “This is Ellora calling any and all Havens,” she says. “We need you.”

Karthik has already crossed that line illegally. Episode 5 reveals his contact with at least one other Haven, “Akasha,” whose spelling is still uncertain. Presumably, he wants to alert his fellow White Lotus contacts that news of the Avatar is getting out. He also tried to persuade Kayoko to ask the other Havens for assistance. Between the Faceless abducting benders and the Affliction taking hold of others, Ellora needs more benders to protect it.

It takes Jae to persuade Kayoko to call for aid in episode 6, after frightened benders air their grievances during a small riot. Both the title and the intro establish that this shattered, post-apocalyptic world contains seven Havens. So far, though, the series has stayed entirely in Ellora, with barely a glimpse of the Harshlands. Kayoko’s appeal could open the story beyond the city, assuming anyone hears it.

Pavi’s missing history now includes a direct challenge to something she thought she knew about her own body. She believes she was born without part of her left leg; the doctor concludes she lost it within the past few years. The Harshlands memories remain fragmentary, but they’re no longer the only reason to doubt her account of the past.
