Obsession’ May Get a Sequel, and Its Breakout Star Is On Board

Inde Navarrette is open to an Obsession sequel, while director Curry Barker has considered a wishes-gone-wrong anthology. Neither is confirmed.

Inde Navarrette is open to returning for an Obsession sequel, but another film isn’t confirmed. Writer-director Curry Barker has also considered a different route: an anthology about wishes gone wrong that could expand the One Wish Willow’s mythology without continuing Nikki’s story.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Navarrette made her interest in reprising her breakout role clear. “I would totally be open to doing a sequel. Are you kidding me? Who am I to say no?” Navarrette said.

Her comments follow Obsession’s emergence as a horror hit and box-office phenomenon. She’s lining up major roles, including Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot and a starring part in Apple’s sci-fi thriller The Waffle House Index. In the interview, she discussed her sudden rise to fame, those upcoming projects, and where she thinks Nikki’s life goes after the credits.

For Navarrette, that next chapter would begin with Nikki processing what happened to her, rather than immediately facing another nightmare. “I think the non-pretty answer, which I think is more important to give sometimes than kind of just giggling through answers, is she’s starting a grief process,” Navarrette explained.

That interpretation stems from the loss of autonomy at the center of Barker’s film. Nikki’s friend Bear, played by Michael Johnston, uses a mysterious novelty item called the One Wish Willow to make her love him more than anything in the world. The wish has increasingly horrific consequences, leaving Nikki to grapple with an experience she never chose.

Barker has considered more than one way to return to the concept. In May, the writer-director said he was weighing either Obsession 2 or an anthology series exploring different wishes gone wrong, potentially with other filmmakers putting their own spin on the premise.

With both Barker and Navarrette open to returning, a direct sequel remains a possibility. An anthology, though, could follow what the One Wish Willow does to other people without making Nikki’s grief the starting point for another horror story.
