Which MCU AIs Are in Vision’s Mind in VISIONQUEST?

Meet the MCU AIs inside Vision’s mind in VISIONQUEST, from J.A.R.V.I.S. and Stark’s workshop robots to Ultron, his most troubling presence.

Vision’s mindscape in VISIONQUEST brings together the AI that helped create him, Stark’s later assistants, two workshop robots, and the program that nearly destroyed life on Earth. Each appears as a human-looking avatar with a distinct personality. Rather than a friendly support team, they’re a record of Tony Stark’s technology living on inside Vision, with Ultron as its most troubling presence.

J.A.R.V.I.S. links Stark’s workshop to Vision’s creation. The name stands for “Just A Rather Very Intelligent System,” and Tony named the AI after Edwin Jarvis, Howard Stark’s lifelong butler, played by James D’Arcy in Agent Carter. J.A.R.V.I.S. managed Stark Industries’ day-to-day operations and the security of all Stark facilities. Tony also uploaded it into every Iron Man armor.

When Ultron tried to delete J.A.R.V.I.S., the AI saved itself and later downloaded into what would become Vision. It still exists in Vision’s mindscape, providing vital functions in his mainframe. Its human avatar resembles Edwin Jarvis, and James D’Arcy plays the character again in VISIONQUEST. J.A.R.V.I.S.’s functions in Vision’s system include security, housekeeping, and encryption.

D.U.M.-E and U bring Stark’s workshop into Vision’s inner world. Tony built both hydraulic-arm assistants as a teenager. D.U.M.-E first appeared alongside U in Iron Man, often providing comic relief, but it also showed independent intelligence by saving Tony’s life. After Obadiah Stane’s betrayal, Tony couldn’t reach his ARC reactor. D.U.M.-E did.

That rescue gave D.U.M.-E a bigger role than its clumsy workshop routine might suggest. Without it, Loki conquers Earth in Avengers, and there’s no Iron Man to stop Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. D.U.M.-E’s listed functions are general maintenance, limb servo control, and fire suppression. It was last seen helping move things out of Avengers Tower in Spider-Man: Homecoming. In VISIONQUEST, its programming has survived inside Vision, with Henry Lewis playing its human avatar.

U also helped build the Iron Man armors. In 2008, Stark used it to record his progress as he created new suits, and U helped construct them. U was destroyed in Iron Man 3, then rebuilt by Stark. It later helped D.U.M.-E with the move from Avengers Tower in Spider-Man: Homecoming. In Vision’s mindscape, U’s listed functions are general maintenance, defragmentation, and video analysis. Jonathan Sayer plays its avatar.

F.R.I.D.A.Y. joined Stark’s systems after J.A.R.V.I.S. was downloaded into Vision. Its name stands for “Female Replacement Intelligent Digital Assistant Youth” and also plays on the “My Girl Friday” trope of the trusted female assistant. Voiced by Kerry Condon, F.R.I.D.A.Y. replaced J.A.R.V.I.S. as Iron Man’s primary AI assistant in his appearances after Avengers: Age of Ultron. In VISIONQUEST, the AI appears as a human avatar played by Orla Brady, known for Star Trek: Picard.

E.D.I.T.H. has a different place in the group: Tony Stark gave the system to Peter Parker after dying to save the universe in Avengers: Endgame. Its name means “Even Dead I’m The Hero.” Designed essentially for a teenager to use, E.D.I.T.H. brings some of that youthful energy into Vision’s mindscape. Its listed functions include recreational AI, game theory, and weapons.

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Mysterio hijacked E.D.I.T.H., an augmented AI security system with access to Stark’s global satellite network, causing extensive destruction in England. Dawn Michelle King voiced the AI in that film; Emily Hampshire plays its human avatar in VISIONQUEST.

Ultron is why Vision’s mindscape can’t be read as a simple team of helpful assistants. Although Vision appeared to eliminate his creator in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he kept Ultron’s programming locked in his mainframe. The AI is now trapped behind firewalls, represented as a prison in the attic, and James Spader plays him again. Ultron’s listed role is simply “prisoner.”

Tony Stark and Bruce Banner created Ultron as a powerful security AI, but he became their Frankenstein’s monster and came close to ending life on Earth. Now he watches old media produced by humans while deciding whether he’s changed his mind about humanity or still wants to destroy it all. His verdict remains unknown.

VISIONQUEST is streaming on Disney+, with new episodes released every Tuesday.
