Facebook Gives Users More Control Over Their Algorithm

Facebook’s new AI-powered Your Algorithm feature lets users tell the platform what they want to see more or less often in Feed and Reels.

Facebook users can now tell the platform, in ordinary language, what they want to see more or less often in Feed and Reels. Meta’s AI-powered feature, “Your Algorithm,” is designed to give people a more direct say in recommendations instead of leaving their preferences entirely to automated systems.

Meta announced the Facebook launch on Tuesday. The feature first appeared on Instagram, and it lets users describe their preferences in their own words using natural language. Meta says the goal is to make content recommendations more relevant.

Users can adjust their preferences and interact with the algorithms that rank and recommend posts. Meta says changes show up in recommendations in real time, though the practical reach of that control depends on how the system interprets each person’s requests.

Facebook has also updated the three-dot menu on individual posts, making it easier to manage content preferences from the feed itself. The menu lets users open “Your Algorithm” or choose “Interested” and “Not interested” to indicate whether a particular post matches their preferences.

Meta says Facebook may ask follow-up questions to better understand what users liked or disliked. Those questions can give people a way to provide more detailed feedback, including an explanation of what they want to see more or less of. Facebook then uses those responses to refine its recommendations.

The approach shifts some preference-setting from inferred behavior to stated intent: rather than relying only on what people click or watch, Facebook lets them tell the platform directly what topics and content they want more or less often. Meta presents the feature as part of a broader effort to give people more influence over their social media experiences as AI plays a larger role in content discovery.

That also brings Facebook closer to streaming services, where users can personalize recommendations around their interests and preferences. The comparison points to a change from the traditional recommendation systems that have shaped social media experiences for years, but the available controls still depend on how well Facebook understands and applies users’ feedback.

The Facebook launch builds on Meta’s personalization work across its other platforms. Instagram introduced Your Algorithm in June, extending customization to Feed and Explore after first launching the feature for Reels in December 2025. Threads has a related feature, “Dear Algo,” which lets users influence the content recommended to them.
