How to start “An Unheard Farewell” in Valor Mortis
“An Unheard Farewell” is a Chapter 2 side quest in Valor Mortis. The Adjudant says his squad is supposedly scouting the area, but they haven’t returned. He’s too scared to look for his comrades himself, so the task falls to William.
After defeating the grenadier, but before descending the large, broken bridge, you’ll pass a wagon with an Adjudant Sous-Officer inside. He’ll be yelling at you, so he’s hard to miss.

Listen to his story and offer to help.
“An Unheard Farewell” quest walkthrough in Valor Mortis
Once you’ve unlocked the Demolished Path lantern near the wagon, follow the path down the broken bridge. Jump from platform to platform until you can descend no further, then pass through the small wagon on the left to get the pistol.

At the next lantern, climb the rocks and shoot the glowing orb to unlock the elevator.

Take the elevator upward as far as possible; the highest level is blocked. Pass through the tunnel on your right and fight your way through the caves. Outside, complete the small parkour section to reach the purple glob blocking the elevator, then shoot the two glowing orbs to unlock it fully.
You could now go upward and continue the main path, but that would mean missing the “An Unheard Farewell” quest objective. Instead, go down and look for a narrow ledge between the tunnel you entered earlier and the highest level. The entrance to the hidden cave is blocked by a web-like substance. Use your fire transmutation to burn it away, then defeat the elite soldier inside.

Although this mini-boss fights like a regular soldier, he’s much faster, deals more damage, and receives less. Try to parry his attacks to deal posture damage and stun him. Once his health is low, shoot him in the head with your brand-new pistol.
Before leaving the cave, read the letter to learn what happened to the soldiers. Collect the pure blade material from the treasure chest, then follow the main path back to the Adjudant Sous-Officer’s wagon.
Tell the truth about the soldiers or lie – the Adjudant won’t believe they’re gone either way. As a reward for completing “An Unheard Farewell” in Valor Mortis, you’ll receive the Sleight of Hand amber, which reduces firearm reload times and speeds up weapon switching.
