Hulu Confirms Reboot of Beloved Classic Sci-Fi Series

Hulu orders Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as FBI agents investigating unexplained cases.

Ryan Coogler’s reboot of The X-Files has received a series order from Hulu. It will follow two FBI agents investigating unexplained cases, rather than returning to Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel play two very different agents in the vein of Mulder and Scully. They form an unlikely bond after being assigned to The X-Files, a long-shuttered division dedicated to cases involving unexplained phenomena.

Coogler has spoken about rebooting Chris Carter’s series since 2023. Deadwyler and Patel were cast in early 2026, and announcements later named Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, and Ben Foster as high-profile guest stars.

Coogler wrote and directed the pilot. He’ll also executive produce the series with showrunner Jennifer Yale, whose writing credits include Dexter and Da Vinci’s Demons. Ludwig Göransson, a longtime Coogler collaborator who won Oscars for his scores for Black Panther and Sinners, is composing the pilot’s music.

Coogler said in a statement: “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.”

Hulu has yet to give the series a release date. Coogler previously said it would premiere before the next Black Panther film, which is set to arrive on Dec. 15, 2028. If the schedule stays on track, the pilot will likely debut in 2027 or early 2028.
