Sony is releasing the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, but only in Japan. It goes on sale Nov. 19 for ¥55,000, with both the console and the bundled DualSense controller finished in a sleek, matte black.
The release follows Sony’s Japanese-language-only PlayStation 5, which launched exclusively in Japan last year for the same ¥55,000 price. Sony intended that model to cost relatively less than it could offer in the United States, citing unpredictable import tariffs and trade policies. The Japan-exclusive PS5 costs roughly the equivalent of $350, compared with $599 for the Digital PlayStation 5 in the United States. The console has become more expensive since its initial release.
Aside from its new color wave, the Midnight Black model is identical to that Japan-exclusive PlayStation 5. Buyers get the console and a matching DualSense controller; the disc drive is sold separately. Sony will also release a Midnight Black disc drive for ¥11,980.
People outside Japan may not be able to buy this specific edition. Sony does sell Midnight Black console covers for existing PS5 hardware for $54. The covers cost extra on top of the console, but they’re the way to get a similar look outside Japan.
