Apple developed its new Home Collection with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric, a departure from its long-running effort to build and support its smart-home accessories itself.
Revealed Tuesday, the collection covers a smart deadbolt, video doorbell, thermostat, temperature sensor, and security cameras. The devices are made to work with HomeView, Apple’s hub for managing connected accessories and using Apple software. They’re scheduled to arrive in December.
The products could help Apple compete with Amazon Ring and Google Nest, two established names in connected-home security. Apple’s $349.95 smart lock supports ultra-wideband (UWB), which detects proximity more precisely than traditional Bluetooth. In theory, it can recognize an authorized user as they approach and unlock the door automatically, so there’s no need to take out a phone or use a physical key.
The wired video doorbell costs $249.95. It lets homeowners see who’s outside, monitor visitors, and get alerts when someone approaches their property. When a visitor rings the bell, Apple devices such as HomeView, HomePod, and HomePod mini can play a chime. The user also receives a notification on an iPhone or iPad.
The temperature sensor reports conditions in individual rooms, allowing users to spot differences between them and make adjustments. Apple is also adding indoor and outdoor cameras, plus a $399.95 floodlight camera that combines exterior lighting and video monitoring. The cameras support live viewing, motion detection, intelligent alerts, and video storage.
