Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor is getting a Christmas-themed audio adventure after all, but it won’t replace the BBC’s 2026 TV special. Big Finish’s full-cast audio drama, The Ninth Doctor Adventures: The Wash, brings Eccleston back as the Time Lord.
The distinction matters: after the BBC put Doctor Who up for competitive tender, fans were told there would be no TV Christmas special this year. Showrunner Russell T. Davies and production company Bad Wolf stepped aside to make room for new creatives to lead the series into a different era.
Eccleston’s return is a separate, smaller-scale audio release. He’s best known for playing the Ninth Doctor alongside Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, facing Daleks, Slitheen and even sentient gas masks. Twenty years later, he’s back in the role for The Ninth Doctor Adventures: The Wash.
