13 Years Ago, Rick and Morty’s Most Horrifying Episode Changed Everything

Rick and Morty’s “Lawnmower Dog” turns an A Nightmare on Elm Street parody into a surprisingly human story—and sets the tone for the series.

“Lawnmower Dog,” the second episode of Rick and Morty, turns an A Nightmare on Elm Street parody into a story about vulnerability. Scary Terry starts out as a threat in Morty’s dream. But when Rick and Morty realize he’s afraid, he becomes their ally. That shift offers an early blueprint for the series: an absurd sci-fi setup meets familiar horror, then takes a surprisingly human turn.

The show has returned to horror parodies over the years, most recently mixing The Santa Clause and Prometheus in season 9’s “The Last Temptation of Jerry.” It has also spoofed movies across genres, from Total Recall to Freaky Friday. But “Lawnmower Dog” does more than borrow horror imagery: Scary Terry’s shift from attacker to ally gives the joke an emotional hinge.

Rick and Morty enter Scary Terry’s dream to help Morty with his nightmares, riffing on Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare on Elm Street. The dream world provides danger and surreal comedy. The story turns when Rick and Morty see that Scary Terry is frightened too. Rather than simply defeat him, they respond to his vulnerability, and he helps them.

This became a useful pattern for the series. A pop-culture reference sets up the episode’s strange machinery, but the story can still turn toward a character’s feelings. In “Lawnmower Dog,” the horror figure isn’t just a monster to outsmart. His fear changes how Rick and Morty treat him.

It’s a smaller-scale version of the emotional turns later stories would take into darker territory. The episode’s nightmare logic makes room for a humane response without losing the comedy, establishing a contrast that became one of Rick and Morty’s defining strengths.
