On September 22, 2026, Donald Trump announced the creation of a new AI task force during the UN General Assembly, aiming to shift the conversation around artificial intelligence. He declared that the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) would be replaced with “superintelligence” (SI), arguing that the old terminology no longer reflects the current technological advancements that are expanding human cognitive capabilities.
Super Intelligence Force Leadership
Jay Clayton as Leader
Jay Clayton, the Director of National Intelligence, has been appointed to lead the newly established Super Intelligence Force (SIF). This organization will coordinate collaboration between the federal government and consumers, public interest groups, religious organizations, critical infrastructure operators, and companies focused on superintelligence.
Joining Clayton on the task force are Andrew Ferguson, Chair of the Federal Trade Commission, and Emil Michael, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. Trump noted that the task force will report directly to him and Susie Wiles, the White House Chief of Staff.
In a discussion about the future of technology, Trump met with key AI developers, including Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta. During this summit, industry leaders voiced their concerns about the existential risks posed by AI, a perspective that Trump largely downplayed.
While tech sector leaders have called for stricter regulations, Trump has indicated that he will not pursue heavy-handed oversight. Instead, he and six company executives signed a voluntary, non-binding self-regulatory agreement at the White House. This agreement commits them to establish both internal and external oversight systems to ensure that the technology is used appropriately and to address potential security issues.
