GTA 6 Might Finally Address the Gaming Industry’s Drug Issue

Reports indicate that _Grand Theft Auto 6_ will allow players to use cocaine at any time, even enabling them to snort it off their hands. This intriguing feature raises questions about how Rockstar Games might integrate drug use into gameplay mechanics, potentially moving beyond the traditional portrayals seen in earlier titles.

Drugs are central to the story in _GTA 6_. At the game’s outset, players meet Jason and Lucia during a drug deal that goes awry. Later, while providing security for a VIP at a media company, one of their clients goes upstairs to do cocaine in a conference room. Although drug references are common in the franchise, Rockstar has a chance to enrich the gameplay mechanics surrounding this theme.

In previous Rockstar titles like _GTA 5_ and _Red Dead Redemption 2_, drugs primarily served as temporary stat boosts, often followed by debuffs from overuse. In _Starfield_, using too many stimulants slows oxygen recovery and reduces carry capacity; addiction can be treated with a doctor’s visit, though that’s a nuisance if you’re away from a major city. In _The Outer Worlds 2_, overusing your tobacco-fueled inhaler can trigger the permanent “drug addiction” flaw, which reduces the inhaler’s restorative effect but also lowers its toxicity – a very minor trade-off either way. In contrast, _GTA 6_ has the potential to introduce more significant and lasting gameplay impacts from drug use.

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that the team went against the usual trade-offs: “Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way – everything is dialed up, detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density.” Garbut also noted that _GTA 6_’s choice-driven gameplay is designed to inspire multiple playthroughs, which suggests drug use could carry more complex implications than in previous games. For example, diet and exercise routines will impact how Jason and Lucia look and feel; excessive cocaine use could curb their appetites, influencing not just gameplay but also character development.

Additionally, drug use could strain relationships within the game. It would make sense if the optional romance between Jason and Lucia suffered if one of them used drugs excessively while the other abstained. Players could find themselves locked out of relationship paths due to excessive drug use, adding a layer of consequence that has been largely absent in earlier titles.

Previews have shown that NPCs in _GTA 6_ are far more complex and multifaceted in their reactions than in many other video games. This realism could mean that players face social repercussions for drug use. For example, pulling out cocaine in public spaces like a restaurant or bar may lead to negative reactions, such as disapproving looks or being asked to leave, and in extreme cases, the police could get involved.

Moreover, maintaining a cocaine habit isn’t cheap. It would make sense if being a habitual user of cocaine locked players out of certain missions and relationships. Potential clients who made their money selling drugs still probably wouldn’t want bodyguards who are high protecting them.

Rockstar’s approach to drug use in _GTA 6_ is set to significantly shift how players interact with the game world. By allowing cocaine use to impact character development, relationships, and gameplay paths, the game may encourage players to navigate the consequences of drug use in a way that previous titles did not. This complexity could lead to a more immersive experience, where choices around drug use are intertwined with the overall narrative and character dynamics.
