Apple tightens macOS ‘Full Disk Access’ controls due to AI risks

Just a few days after a journalist claimed that Meta’s Muse app on Mac accessed their private messages – a claim that Meta has contested – Apple revealed plans to strengthen controls surrounding the “Full Disk Access” feature in macOS. While this feature was originally designed to support backups, Apple noted that the emergence of AI agents has considerably increased the risks tied to this access level.

This announcement came on the heels of a report from Inc. columnist Jason Aten, who suggested that Muse appeared to know the details of his private messages, even though he stated he had not given permission to the AI agent. This incident has sparked concerns regarding the security and trust users have in desktop-based AI that can handle files and read messages.

Adding to these worries, Wired reported on a vulnerability in ChatGPT’s Mac app that might have enabled hackers to obtain sensitive data. Such weaknesses highlight the potential risks of desktop AI agents, which typically require users to adjust macOS settings to allow broader access to files, messages, and other personal data.

New Controls for User Access

The company announced it will introduce new controls to ensure that users who truly wish to provide an app with this exceptional level of access can do so only with “very explicit user action.” This initiative aims to improve user security and awareness.

Apple’s Commitment to User Understanding

In its statements, Apple emphasized the escalating risks associated with AI agents, asserting, “Addressing this is critical. As AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially. We are committed to ensuring users clearly understand these risks before granting such access, so they can make informed decisions about their own data and privacy.”

The planned enhancements to the “Full Disk Access” feature reflect Apple’s response to growing security concerns surrounding AI applications, particularly as incidents like the one involving Meta’s Muse app and vulnerabilities in the ChatGPT Mac app underline the need for clearer user consent and awareness.
