Following Donald Trump’s announcement at the UN General Assembly on September 22, there was a 24-hour period during which nearly 4,000 new .si domain registrations occurred. He stated that the United States would stop using the term “artificial intelligence” in official documents, opting for “superintelligence” instead. This change aims to better capture the advanced capabilities of the technology.
The abbreviation for superintelligence, SI, aligns with Slovenia’s internet country code. Before the announcement, Slovenia had about 200,000 registered domains under this code, according to the local domain registrar, Register.si. The day after Trump’s declaration saw an unprecedented spike in registrations, exceeding the monthly average, which had only seen around 3,500 new entries in August.
According to Slovenian media reports, there was a 24-hour period following the announcement during which nearly 4,000 new .si domains were registered. Despite this sudden surge in demand, Register.si confirmed that operations remained smooth. They also urged brands, companies, and trademark holders to quickly secure their desired .si domains if they hadn’t already done so.
This isn’t an isolated incident; similar situations have occurred before. For example, Anguilla saw a significant revenue boost from the .ai domain, while Tuvalu benefited from the .tv extension, attracting tech companies and investors eager to take advantage of these new domain opportunities.
However, Register.si noted that, at this time, there are no solid grounds to predict million-euro revenues for Slovenia from this phenomenon. Each domain comes with a 10-euro administrative fee for authorized registrars, with no markup passed on to consumers.
