Jailbreak community hackers often seem to work at the drop of a hat, at least this time around. Just in the time when iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak arrived, Apple dropped new build 9B208 of iOS 5.1.1 for iPhone 4 GSM users. This yield the just released Absinthe exploit render useless for those who just upgraded to new firmware. However, as always is the case, pod2g and his team member turned the table and quickly updated their respective tool to incorporate new changes.
iH8sn0w, a developer and hacker of iOS community who vigorously works on Windows utility called sn0wbreeze, has also quickly incorporated the same exploit and updated his tool to sn0wbreeze 2.9.5. Sn0wbreeze is a simple to understand tool and popular among users who love to cook their own custom firmware using stock IPSW firmware. Those who still in dilemma can refer our guide on how to download iOS stock firmware directly from Apple. All you have to do is just utilize the stock firmware during the process and it will take care of the rest. The best part about sn0wbreeze is that preserving of your baseband is almost guaranteed provided you haven’t made any mess during the jailbreak process.
The relentless fray between Apple and jailbreak developers, who always love the freedom, will always continue like this. There will be a time when Apple will have upper hand contrariwise there will be a time when jailbreak developers have upper hand. If you’re reading this post with keen interest then you belong to second category of people, well, in some way. The new version of sn0wbreeze i.e. sn0wbreeze 2.9.5 just includes a bug fix along with untether payload. iH8sn0w tweets about sn0wbreeze 2.9.5,
- Added 5.1.1/ 9B208 untether payload for iPhone 4 GSM
- Added iPhone 3GS (iPad baseband) location services fix
Note that, the latest version 2.9.5 of sn0wbreeze may not be useful for all. It will not harm if you re-run it but it is especially designed for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 GSM users with 9B208 update. iPhone 3GS new baseband users have only had this problem so users of old baseband can ignore this update. Unfortunately, due to lack of low level exploit, sn0wbreeze supports A4 devices only. A5 and A5x users would have to rely on Absinthe tool as of now. Absinthe will help to get untether jailbreak on iOS 5.1.1 firmware on A5(X) devices.
Since A5(X) low level exploit is not found yet, users have no choice to hacktivate and preserve the baseband using this tool. It will be only possible when low level exploit is found which allow users to go into DFU mode to achieve the same.
