Google Drive, the first giant step of Google in dog-eat-dog cloud computing segment, has already raised a concern in tech corridor. The conspicuous consumption of free cloud resource has increased by manifold ever since the arrival of Dropbox and other service providers. Google made the competition fiercer by adding more spice to it – Google docs, Google chrome web apps, offline working mode and many other tools. The first step towards gaining prime position in the cloud service segment was to lure not only Windows users, but Mac users as well. Although, the dedicated Google Drive Mac client is good, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. The interface is far from what you would expect from a Mac app and the options enjoyed by power-users are scarce.

The developers behind Archy probably knew that the lack of options in official Google Drive Mac client could be troublesome for importunate users. Hence, they developed Archy to give remittance to the end-users especially power users.

Installation and Usage

It doesn’t take a genius or requires special skill to install Archy on your Mac. When you run the Archy for the first time, it will ask you to connect to your Google account. Simply, enter your login credential in the given Windows to sync your Google Drive account to the Mac client. 2-step verification users can generate an application specific password to verify their credentials. The virtual tour will give you a glance at the features of Archy. Unfortunately, there is no option to sign in with a multiple Google accounts. Multiple account users or business users may find it bit redundant.

The quick navigation will let you perform most repetitive tasks subtly. The left hand sidebar has file, favorite, contacts, collections and trash option. The right hand pane will display all the documents in a more elegant way. There are certain options like quickly adding the document or file to favorite, change permissions and open up in default app. This is where it is very useful. You can maintain the integrity of your document from the interface with minimal efforts. Archy has cleverly integrated such features without hampering the user experience. The right side section will also display profile pictures of the people with whom you have shared document with.

The preference section will let you set up default applications launching. As you would have anticipated, by default, it utilizes Google’s own service, but you could change the setting to open respective documents in applications of your choice. Archy will remember your setting and will open respective documents in application of your choosing. There are few other options to available to play with menu bar and other UI related errands. Such features make Archy probably the only full-featured Google drive client for Mac.

The top navigation section hosts +, Contacts and Trash option. The + option will let you upload files to Google Docs directly. Now starts the beauty. Any changes made will be updated in next synchronization. The same option is available in Google drive client already, but Archy adds more elegance to it.

A real time notification system will pop up a new notification whenever any changes have been made to the documents shared with you. It will also notify if a new file has been uploaded or new file has been shared with you. Thus, it avoids usage of the web interface or manually looking into Google Drive folder for the new document. The keyboard shortcuts is a great boost for productivity likers. It works with common shortcut keys.

Final Verdict

Archy is arguably the best Google Drive Client for Mac. It offers so many features that you will instantly fall in love with it. The downside of the application is that it doesn’t support multiple accounts. Apart from that, the biggest disadvantage is that it is not directly integrated into the Google Drive folder of your Mac. It creates a separate hidden folder in your system where it stores all the files. This means that if you have a Google Drive client on your Mac, then you will end up having multiple copies of the same file.
