Google has rolled out yet another cool google lab feature on 15th november. Google has always been the first to roll out some unique features. Google swirl image search engine not only finds out similar images but it divides them into the group and sub-groups.
Basically Google swirl groups the images according to searched keywords. When you click on the image it will form a cluster of all images. The clustering is done based on the similarity of the images.
Let us search for the word “potato chips” at image swirl search engine to understand how the google swirl search engine works. When you search for the term “potato chips” in google search engine you will see 12 images related to chips (you can see that lay’s and tom’s potato chips also come up in the result). Now let us click on the first image of potato chips. You will be amazed to see that it has grouped the images of potato chips according to first image (check carefully, the chips add of lay’s and tom’s chip is not there in the image).
You can further explore each subgroup by clicking on the images. It will present more cluster of the given image.
Swirl search engine is basically based on the technique called “Similar images” and “Picasa face recolonization” to which decides how to group the images in groups and hierarchies of the group.
You can check the search engine in work from here
Try Google swirl image search engine and enjoy having the fun with image search
